Pentagon Sets Procedures for AI-Assisted Software Development
Department of War CIO Kirsten Davies signed guidance on "Accelerated Mission Software" on August 31, and it took effect September 8. The 37-page instruction encourages components to use AI to speed software delivery while setting a baseline for how that code is handled. AI-generated code counts as unverified input, and developers stay fully accountable for its security, functionality, and integrity. Any AI-generated change to security- or safety-critical functionality needs human review and approval, and all AI-suggested code goes through the same review and security testing as code written by hand. Teams also have to keep a record of the models, versions, and significant datasets used to generate or test software, described as an evidence package analogous to an SBOM. Non-public code, configuration scripts, and schematics cannot go into generative AI tools that aren't on DoW systems or approved for use.
